Sunny Schubert was kind enough to mention this blog in Wednesday's H-I column, where she comments on the "The School Calendar debate" that was brought up here: the fact that we have 13 half-days in the school calendar. Sunny notes that on the one hand these half days provide for teacher in-service training and compensation time for things like the parent teacher conferences that occur outside of the regular work hours; but on the other hand they are an inconvenience for parents and may be less effective instructional time.

The DPI requires 180 days of instruction each year, but it also allows the half-days to count toward this total (yes I agree this is problematic). Two half-days get us a whole day of comp. time or in-service without extending the school year for the staff, while consolidating two half days into one would require an additional day of staff time to offset the missed day of instruction. Very roughly a day of staff time is approximately 0.4% of the annual operating budget of the district.

I'm all for increasing instructional time and reducing the disruptions in the calendar, but the question is: If we had 2-3% more to spend, is it best spent consolidating these days? It is not my intent to minimize the concerns of parents about the calendar, nor do I disagree. It's just that the current system is the result of complex and competing considerations.

FYI, the 9th, 10th, and 12th graders start at 1 PM Wednesday. The 11th graders are taking the ACT in the morning. Tally another half day for all of them.

Not on this topic, and perhaps you could start a new thread.

The Herald's article (4/30/09) regarding the stimulus is a bit confusing. Can you clear up some questions.

What are the current deficit projections?

$247,081 with proposed cuts/stimulus?

$756,600 with everything exactly like this year, and no cuts/stimulus?

$800,000 under the governor's budget, and no cuts/stimulus, or
$800,000 under the governor's budget WITH cuts and stimulus (about $1,300,000 without cuts/stimulus).

I will look the article over, check the numbers and post about it in the next few days!

Yo Anonymous,

Check out my comment in response to Peter’s April 9th post entitled “The Year Ahead:” You will find that I strongly support the Districts decision to use the EPAS tests, which include the Explore, Plan, and the ACT.

My concern is that we have made significant cuts in the number of full days of instruction we provide for our students. The 180 day school year is a thing of the past. There are only 167 full days of school on our calendar, but this number sinks to fewer than 160 when you subtract the days off for cold or snow, days used for standardized testing, (WKCE, MAPS, EPAS), semester exams, winter festivals, trips to Noah’s Ark, and so on.

As I said in my comment on Peter’s February 26th post “Going the Distance”, the MG school calendar is designed for interrupted learning and it is not good for kids. As the Board develops a long range strategic plan I hope they will include the goal of gradually increasing the number of full days of instruction per year, until we are at the DPI mandated 180.
