Nothing huge on the agenda for Wednesday's meeting. We will recognize the outgoing board members, with the departure of John and Phil the board will have much less collective experience than it has had in a long time. We will miss it.

Craig will provide an update of the doings of the Ad Hoc grade configuration committee and introduce us to the new Administrative Assistant who will replace Bev.

The board will also discuss the Open Enrollment applications, again we received a very large number, 174. The plan is to accept 103, mostly in High School, and wait list the rest. We have enough students wait listed for Kindergarten at Maywood (19) to open another section if we so choose. We will probably discuss that option on Wednesday. The large number of open enrollment applicants is a very positive sign. Most people expected last year's increase to be a one-time thing due to Madison's change in policy, but it looks like the surge is continuing.

And don't forget to vote on Tuesday!

How incredibly interesting that the numbers in Monona are going up! Gloom and Doom was predicted and here we are! Yes! Open another section and let's get some kids in there.

Wasn't there 72-74 students (non open enrollment) for Maywood kindergarten next year? That is 4 sections with Monona children alone. I wonder if we were to put in a 5th section (numbers boosted by open enrollment) where would they go? Just curious... Shove special ed in a broom closet or something?? :)I wonder if letting in that many students to make a 5th section of kindergarten next year and we have a bumper crop of kindergartners the following year, that we will have overcrowding at Maywood which would be great in some regards (shows that we are growing in Maywood) but will there be the space for them all?

This would have been a good week to discuss the School District calendar. It brings to mind the old line that a camel is a horse that was designed by a committee. In this case, we have a calendar designed to promote interrupted learning. And it does a good job of it.

You have to wonder if anyone spoke up during the negotiations and suggested taking off all of Friday the 10th instead of half days on Wednesday and Friday. Since DPI counts a half day as a full day, that’s probably the rationale. But with so many half days in our calendar we need to reject this kind of math. Two half days do not sum to one whole day in quality instructional time. And kids, enjoy your day off on Monday too!

No kidding, this calendar makes about as much sense a three dollar nickle. I thing it is a remenant of the past and is not serving any BODY!

At Wednesday's meeting we agreed to admit the 19 wait listed Maywood Kindergarten Open Enrollment applicants. Given that on average only 40% of those accepted will show up in September it was felt that in all likelyhood we can accomodate everyone in the current planned 4 classes at or about the class size goal. In the event that we have more students that we can put in 4 classes then Deb assures us there is room for a 5th class.

Sounds like a sound plan. Were there other open enrollment students let in other grades?

Yes, we accepted about 120 students, the largest group is high school freshmen. Historically about 40% of the open enrollment applicants show up in September.
