This week in meetings part 1)

Wed 5pm: Business Services Committee meeting. Items of note:

V) Energy Performance contract with McKinstry. Once more into the breach.

VI) 2009-10 budget update and preliminary budget proposal: This will be the first detailed look at the proposed budget reductions for next year. This is a discussion only, nothing will be approved

VII) Approval of district transportation bids: Bus service (currently provided by Badger Bus) is run with 5 year contracts. The current contract ends this year and we have solicited bids for the next 5 years. We will also make a recommendation concerning continued district operation of routes in Cottage Grove or if those should also be contracted.

VIII) School start and end times: To reduce transportation costs we will discuss a proposal to adjust the bell times for the CG 5th graders.

IX) Walk Zones: Change the 5th grade walk zones to match the 6th grade walk zones district wide. Currently siblings in the same building might be in the situation where the 5th grader is bused while the 6th grader walks.

The District is headed for some very rough times. Can you comment on the leadership of our new Superintendent? Is he in over his head?

Craig has a huge number of difficult things on his plate: contract negotiations, a big budget deficit, working out the bugs of all the changes made last year, the difficult politics of the district, all on top of adjusting to a new district and learning to work with a new administrative team. Difficult circumstances? Yes. But I haven't seen anything to indicate he is in "over his head".

Why the hesitation for public meetings on closing Maywood?

Certainly, Monona folks don't want to pay any more taxes. I know I don't. And those Cottage Grove kids are going to need a new school here before we know it. What are we going to do then?

Let's just get it over with, already. The writing has been on the wall since the last referendum passed, lots of people told us this would happen sooner or later. Guess sooner was the best bet.

Why is everyone so afraid to talk about it now that it seems inevitable?

I don't think closing Maywood is inevitable. I think that we should look at closing down, and/or selling Nichols. All the offices and folks who work in that building could easily work in either Maywood or Winnequah- and converting classrooms to offices/cubbies is just not that big a deal. Then we are fully utilizing two school buildings, and not paying to heat, etc another. And, if we sold it, that would be a great boon to the district---The fact that we are paying money to have offices at Nichols, while empty rooms sit fully heated at Winnequah is silly.
Instead of shuffling kids around constantly, lets shuffle some central office folks. It is better if they are actually in a school anyway.

"Is he in over his head?"

No.
May I suggest that you are talking and worrying about the past. He has my patience and trust.
