This doesn't seem like the right direction...

The Legislature's budget-writing committee on Tuesday signed off on a proposal by Gov. Scott Walker to phase out a program designed to help students -- especially those from low-income families -- find a path to a college degree.

You can find the full story here.

Wisconsin Covenant scholars who follow the program's guidelines -- and earn at least a B average in high school -- are guaranteed spots in the University of Wisconsin System, the state technical college system or one of the state's 20 private colleges.

Education isn't an expense, its an investment.

P.S. Sorry for the posting hiatus...

Not a Walker fan by any means, but the Covenant program was always bogus because it wasn't funded.

Why don't we dismiss school about two weeks earlier? The last two weeks are nothing more then organized daycare with a multitude of field-trips and distractions.

It would save my money and the districts to end this thing two or even three weeks earlier.

Yes, yes DPI has a set rule about number of days, but my god man this is cuckoo.

I think if the year was shorter, the last few weeks would still be distracting. Kids will always get excited as they near vactions.

Why not be on the cutting edge and go to year round school. Set it up so there are a few weeks off between grading periods. There would be less review when a new session starts, less build up towards the end of the year, better knowledge and skills retention, less complaining about teachers having summers off. Of course, they would have to be paid more and rightly so. Get away from the agri- system of the early 20th century and move into the 21st century

We can't go state-wide year-round because too many businesses would lobby against that. Look at how they have been able to manipulate the school year to start no earlier than Sept 1. No educators, no school district wanted that. It was passed in the middle of the night. As long as our politicians are bought and sold with campaign contributions, we are mired down in partisan nonsense.

Uh oh. The Grammar Police. I suppose it should have said "won't."
